The IA experience does not just take place in a classroom, on campus, or with the guidance of a professor. Sometimes, it can happen in unlikely places - say, in a coffee shop whilst talking about your latest dream-big moment, or online, sharing ideas in the comments thread of a video. For Zahra Khan, her Innovation Academy experience happened in another time zone - 4,000 miles away in Ireland.
On Saturday, January 6th, more than 400 students were officially welcomed to the University of Florida at the Launch into IA convocation. The ceremony presented the first occasion for IA freshmen to celebrate their entry into UF and convene with the rest of their cohort. Students, along with family and friends, received an opportunity to hear from distinguished guests, including President Fuchs, Mr. Norm Dunkel, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, and from the Student Body President, Mr. Smith Myers.
Students in Creativity in Context—IDS1353— finished their final projects this February and impressed both their professors and peers with their sophisticated child development toys made completely on 3-D printers. In collaboration with Infinity Fab Lab, a digital fabrication space available at Infinity Hall, IA students utilized their skills in creativity, design thinking, and prototyping to create full-functioning learning tools for children.

A team of four University of Florida students took second place in the first annual MuniMod statewide hackathon competition May 13 in Orlando. The 24-hourlong event, which presents civic problems challenging our cities, is sponsored by Florida League of Cities and Domi Station. Each team competes for a grand prize of $10,000 to continue the work on their project. This time around, however, an on-the-spot second place prize – written out on a napkin -- was handed out by judges to reflect a one-point difference.
