Finding My Path Through UF’s Innovation Academy: Lessons, Growth, and Advice for Future Trailblazers
When I first started at the University of Florida, I had no idea how much the Innovation Academy (IA) would shape not just my college experience, but also my personal and professional growth.
Coming into UF, I was eager but also a little unsure of what direction I wanted my future to take. Over the past few years, between my coursework, internships, and involvement on campus, I’ve gained clarity about who I am, what I want to do, and how to adapt when plans change.

One of the most unique aspects of IA is the unconventional spring-summer schedule. At first, it felt overwhelming to be “out of sync” with the rest of campus, but I quickly realized it was one of the program’s greatest advantages. It allowed me to take on opportunities — like internships and professional experiences — at times when most students weren’t looking. That flexibility gave me a competitive edge in the job market, something I didn’t fully appreciate until I started applying for positions later on.
Throughout my time at UF, I’ve learned that growth happens most when you step outside of your comfort zone. For me, that meant saying yes to opportunities even when I wasn’t 100% sure I was ready. I joined student organizations, participated in networking events, and pursued internships that pushed me to develop new skills. One of my most impactful experiences was my internship with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (SGWS), where I worked as part of the sales team. I was nervous at first — it felt like a big leap from the classroom to the corporate world — but it ended up being a turning point for me. I learned how to build relationships with clients, adapt to fast-paced environments, and, most importantly, work collaboratively as part of a team.
Of course, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. Balancing classes, internships, and personal responsibilities wasn’t easy, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed. I learned quickly that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness — whether it’s reaching out to professors, advisors, or peers, having a support system makes all the difference. IA, in particular, creates such a strong sense of community, and I’m grateful for the mentors and friends who guided me along the way.
For students considering IA, my biggest piece of advice is to embrace its unique opportunities and make the most of the resources available to you. Get involved early — join IA events, pursue leadership roles, or seek out internships — because the experiences you gain outside the classroom are just as valuable as what you learn inside it. For those currently navigating the job hunt or preparing to enter the workforce, I’d encourage you to focus on building connections. Networking can feel intimidating, but it’s one of the most powerful tools you have. So many of my opportunities came from conversations I had at events or relationships I built during internships. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there — even a quick introduction can lead to something bigger down the road.
Lastly, if you’re thinking about studying abroad or getting involved in research, go for it. Those are the kinds of experiences that broaden your perspective and make you stand out to future employers. Even if it feels like a risk, those are the moments that will shape you the most.
Looking back, my time at UF and at the Innovation Academy has been filled with challenges, growth, and opportunities I never imagined when I started. I’m walking away not just with a degree, but with a clearer sense of purpose and confidence in my ability to navigate whatever comes next.
