IA in Maynooth: Where Culture and Innovation Thrive
By Morgan Witt
Experience Ireland’s innovation and culture through the UF International Center’s study abroad program for first-year students.
In Ireland, a country where innovation, inventiveness and opportunity thrive, the UF International Center has developed a cutting-edge study abroad program aimed at immersing students in the world of innovation and Irish culture. Intentionally designed for first-year students, this six-week program provides a unique opportunity for students to earn credits and expand their knowledge through international cultural experiences.
This year, 15 IA students, led by Dr. Jeff Citty, director of IA, and Charlie Cummings, lecturer at IA, embarked on an exciting trip to Maynooth, Ireland, from August 26 to October 7, 2023. These students were enrolled in Innovation Mindset and Design Thinking and participated in cultural visits and business visits to gain a deeper understanding of the innovation ecosystem in Ireland. By visiting businesses such as Portershed, Tallaght University Hospital, Autodesk and more, students witnessed firsthand the innovative projects, practices and mindsets that have made Ireland a hub for creativity and entrepreneurship.
One participating student, Thomas Stochl, wrote a blog of his experience on the trip:
“When I first entered university, I thought I would be living the traditional college life. Working on my major, participating in clubs and pursuing my interests in careers,” Stochl wrote. “However, this experience has made me realize that my education can be so much more than that now, I can tailor my university experience to be the best for me to grow personally, academically and professionally.”
