Only the Beginning: My Story of Freshman Year
By Stephanie Barbosa
Hi, my name is Stephanie Barbosa a first year Finance major here at the University of Florida with a minor in Innovation. Join me as I share my insights, struggles, and triumphs in navigating the transition from high school to university life. As my first official semester here at the University of Florida comes to an end, I look back on a semester filled with unknowns, hard work, resilience, and determination. As a first-generation college student coming to college was filled with overwhelming worries. As soon as I got accepted to the University of Florida last spring, I knew I was set for an exceptional future at an amazing school. As a highly independent and responsible eldest daughter the move to college was easier but nonetheless a big change moving six hours away from home.
As a finance major in IA, I dove headfirst into my coursework, eager to absorb knowledge and challenge myself intellectually. Although hard I was happy to be focusing on my future career immersing myself in as many ways as possible. One of the most rewarding aspects of college has been the opportunity to connect with fellow students who share my passion for finance. Joining clubs and organizations related to my field of study has allowed me to forge meaningful friendships and build a support network that extends beyond the classroom. The excitement of independence, new friendships, and academic exploration filled my heart with anticipation. I am always looking for ways to challenge myself and stand out. Being a trilingual Brazilian-American I joined the Brazilian Student organization here on campus which introduced me to many new friends and opportunities. As well as the Exploring Financial Economics program with Mrs. Fajre, which introduced me into all the different sectors of Finance and prepared me for the Financial Development Program I will be in next year. This program opened my eyes to the endless opportunities I have in the finance world and how I can make an impact. Lastly, I am a part of the member-mentee program in the Women in Business club which has set me up for success with my amazing mentor, Natalie who gives me advice and guidance in a club surrounded by women empowering each other in the business realm.
Taking steps outside of my comfort zone has led to huge success. This spring semester, I competed in the Sales in the Swamp competition a Warrington role-play competition at the University of Florida which I found out about from a simple flyer. I had to sell Gartner for High Tech Providers a tech service with three core capabilities. I remember receiving the initial case email from Dr. Dennis Pasquale and it involved me emailing back saying I don’t think I can do this and asking if I could back out because I had no selling experience. He was quick to shut down my worries and insisted I competed. Through preparation and enthusiastic teamwork, and three rounds of pitching over two days, I was happy to have sold the service! At the awards dinner I was awarded the Best Speed Sell award for my pitch as well as other prizes. Beyond happy I did not let my worries get to me and competed in something I wasn’t sure about. It is only when you are placed in uncomfortable situations that you grow and flourish!
Along with great success there have been moments when I struggled. There were numerous programs I have signed up for an either did not get accepted or did not receive an answer back. Initially, I got very upset and frustrated, but I later learned it was all for the best. Opportunities come and go, an opportunity that is truly meant for you will not pass you. Whether it was not the right moment, or an even better opportunity is coming your way, do not worry! Be strong willed and comfortable with failure and never stop reflecting on past experiences. Let curiosity guide your steps, and let courage be your compass. With each leap beyond familiarity, you not only redefine your limits but also redefine yourself. So, dare to be bold, dare to be adventurous, and dare to discover the extraordinary within you.”
Looking into the future, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. While the road may be winding and uncertain, I am confident that the University of Florida and the Innovation Academy equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resilience to navigate whatever challenges come my way. This sophomore year I look forward to the Financial Development Program, analyst positions, Goldman Sachs Virtual Insight Series, networking, and keeping the internship search going. Taking all of this into account I wish all of you the best in your future endeavors.
