Hello! My name is Allison Tivvis, and I’m a sophomore at the University of Florida majoring in Computer Science. My journey through the Innovation Academy (IA) has shown me the power of curiosity and the confidence to explore the unknown when tackling challenges. Embracing this mindset has transformed not only how I approach my studies but also how I face obstacles in my personal and professional life—an experience I hope will inspire both new and future IA students as they embark on their own journeys.
When I joined the Innovation Academy, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation. Walking into my first IA classroom, I immediately sensed something special. Unlike the large lecture halls common in my major, IA classes are close-knit, with an environment where peers support each other, and professors genuinely invest in students’ growth. The sense of community was clear from day one. Knowing I was part of a program that valued connection and creativity made me feel not just welcomed, but empowered.
Initially, I started college majoring in Sustainability and the Built Environment. I soon realized that this major wasn’t the right fit for my interests and goals, but I was hesitant to make a change. My first IA course transformed everything. IA emphasizes a hands-on approach to innovation, encouraging students to “fall in love with the problem, not the solution.” This mindset challenged me to think beyond my comfort zone, inspiring me to explore new fields.
With that courage, I took my first coding class. I didn’t know what to expect—my coding knowledge was limited, but I was motivated by the possibilities ahead. I found myself enjoying the challenges and eventually decided to switch my major to Computer Science. Without IA’s support and its encouragement to step outside of traditional boundaries, I wouldn’t have discovered a field I’m passionate about or felt confident enough to make that leap.
Switching to Computer Science wasn’t easy, especially as someone without a background in coding. The journey was full of late nights, trial and error, and moments of self-doubt. But IA taught me to embrace challenges as part of the growth process. The program’s culture fosters resilience, reminding us that learning something new means embracing occasional setbacks along the way.
Through each challenge, I discovered a newfound strength and determination. Every bit of progress, each successful project, and every “a-ha” moment became milestones that fueled my confidence. IA helped me recognize that growth often happens outside of our comfort zones, and that every step forward is a valuable part of the journey.
For new IA students or anyone interested in innovation, my advice is to stay open to new experiences and embrace learning as an ongoing journey. Approach each challenge with curiosity, seeing it as an opportunity to grow. Whether it’s a new class, a project, or an unfamiliar field, leaning into exploration can often lead to unexpected insights and creative solutions.
Don’t be afraid to dive into the unknown. Taking on something unfamiliar can be intimidating, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By facing challenges head-on, even when you don’t feel fully prepared, you give yourself the chance to learn and adapt along the way.
And finally, focus on understanding the problem deeply rather than jumping straight to a solution. This often reveals new paths and ideas. Each skill you acquire and each new concept you grasp is progress to be proud of, no matter how challenging the journey.
I’m grateful for the journey IA has led me on. It has not only shaped my academic path but also taught me valuable lessons about resilience, community, and self-discovery. For all of you just beginning this journey, know that the Innovation Academy is here to support you as you learn, grow, and innovate. This program will challenge you, but it will also give you the tools and confidence to bring your ideas to life.
