Finding Innovation in Everything You Do
By Ariana Emirzian
I still remember the moment I saw the option to apply for the Innovation Academy when I was filling out my University of Florida application. I didn’t fully understand what it would entail, but the idea of being asked to share an innovative idea or vision immediately intrigued me. That simple prompt sparked something deeper: it planted the seed of an innovative mindset that continues to shape me today.

I began my UF journey as a biology major, but after two semesters, I realized it wasn’t the right path for me. I pivoted to business, hoping it would be a better fit, but after a year, it became clear that wasn’t where my passion lay either. It wasn’t until I found myself in public relations that things started to click. At first, I questioned how PR aligned with my goals, but over time, I discovered that its versatility allowed me to mold it around my own interests, passions, and ambitions.
The turning point came during the summer of my junior year. I joined organizations like the Hispanic Public Relations Student Association, the Public Relations Student Society of America, CHOMP PR, and became an Innovation Ambassador. I also accepted a remote internship with a Miami-based company. These experiences opened my eyes to the vast possibilities within public relations – it’s an umbrella field that connects to countless industries. That’s when I realized I wanted to focus on sports media, specifically event management and operations.
Innovation isn’t always about inventing something brand new; sometimes, it’s about reimagining how existing fields evolve. PR is constantly transforming in response to shifts in technology, social media, and the influencer economy. The roles I aspire to may not even exist yet, but that’s the beauty of innovation. It’s about being adaptable, forward-thinking, and willing to pave your own path.
In my final semester, I took a leap and studied abroad in London. Visiting Wimbledon, one of the most iconic sporting events in the world, was an experience I’ll never forget. Even though I’m not a die-hard tennis fan, the opportunity to immerse myself in that environment, connect with professionals, and witness how tradition and innovation coexist was invaluable.
Today, I’m working with the Miami Marlins’ Youth Academy. While my long-term career path isn’t fully defined, I now have the mindset and tools to create my own opportunities. The Innovation Academy taught me that it’s okay not to have everything figured out, what matters is staying curious, adaptable, and proactive in building the future you envision.
Innovation isn’t a destination; it’s a mindset you carry into everything you do.
