Where Uncertainty Becomes Opportunity: Learning to Grow Beyond My Comfort Zone
By Brooke Fink
When I first joined the Innovation Academy, I thought innovation was about creating the next big invention. As I’ve grown, I’ve realized it’s so much more than that. Innovation is a mindset rooted in curiosity, resilience, and the willingness to embrace uncertainty.

Some of my most meaningful opportunities began before I felt fully prepared. Whether it was applying for leadership positions, joining organizations that challenged me, or accepting a marketing internship where I would support campaigns for multiple communities, I often found myself stepping outside my comfort zone. The Innovation Academy taught me that growth doesn’t happen when you wait until you feel ready. It happens when you’re willing to take the first step, adapt to new challenges, and trust yourself to learn along the way.
That mindset has shaped the way I approach every opportunity. As a Marketing Operations Intern with PulteGroup, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to marketing campaigns from concept to execution. I have created social media content, developed email marketing campaigns, supported community launches, and collaborated with sales, construction, and design teams to bring projects to life. Every day looks a little different, and that’s what has made the experience so rewarding. I’ve learned to ask questions, embrace feedback, and find creative solutions when plans change. Every project has reinforced that innovation isn’t just about creating something new. It is about solving problems, thinking creatively, and embracing uncertainty.
Outside of my internship, I’ve continued to challenge myself through leadership and campus involvement. Participating in the Heavener Leadership Challenge strengthened my ability to lead with authenticity and adapt to different team dynamics. Through the Business Undergraduate Mentorship Program, I’ve built meaningful relationships with mentors and peers who have encouraged me to keep growing. Competing on the University of Florida Sales Competition Team has pushed me to become a stronger communicator and taught me the value of preparation, resilience, and continuous improvement. Gamma Phi Beta has also provided opportunities to serve others, collaborate with a team, and develop leadership skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Looking back, none of these experiences were about having everything figured out before I started. They were about being willing to say yes, even when I felt challenged. Each opportunity was built on the last and gave me more confidence to embrace the next one. The Innovation Academy helped me realize that confidence isn’t something you have before you begin. It’s something you build by being willing to learn.
Innovation Academy has transformed the way I think. It has taught me to embrace challenges instead of avoiding them, remain curious in the face of uncertainty, and view every experience as an opportunity to grow. Those lessons have shaped who I am as a student, marketer, and leader, and they will continue to guide me throughout my career.
To me, being a Trailblazer isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about having the courage to take the first step, trusting the process, and inspiring others to do the same. Innovation isn’t just something I study. It’s the mindset I bring to everything I do.
