My experience at UF through the Innovation Academy
By Cynthya Castro Gonzalez
Reflecting on my experiences at the University of Florida (UF) and within the Innovation Academy (IA), I realize how each opportunity has shaped my journey in unexpected ways. My path has been a blend of excitement, learning, and challenges that have significantly influenced my personal and professional growth.
When I first applied to UF, the IA program captured my attention with its innovative approach to education. I loved the idea of combining academic coursework with practical, real-world projects. One of my most memorable experiences was participating in a team project focused on enhancing sustainability for a network company. Our hard work paid off when our proposal won the Make It Happen Award at the Innovation Academy Catalyst Event. This recognition was a validation of our collaborative efforts, creativity, and determination, which taught me the power of teamwork . Each member brought a unique perspective, and I learned the importance of listening and adapting to others’ ideas. Winning the award ignited my passion for problem-solving and innovation, setting a strong foundation for my future endeavors.
Now, I’m interning at Éliou, a women- and Latina-owned jewelry and fashion business, and it has been an incredible and dynamic experience. While I started with a focus on creating engaging social media content and analyzing metrics, my role quickly expanded beyond that. I’ve had the opportunity to assist with press releases, assist in photoshoots, and tackle various tasks that come up in a fast-paced environment. Every day presents something new, whether it’s brainstorming creative concepts for campaigns or being part of a team setting up for an event. The collaborative atmosphere makes the work enjoyable and invigorating. I’ve met so many talented individuals, and the camaraderie we share makes even the busiest days fun. This role has not only enhanced my skills in marketing and communication but also allowed me to explore my creativity and flexibility in ways I never expected. Working at Éliou has truly reinforced my passion for the industry, and I look forward to each new challenge that comes my way!
Currently, I’m also working as a social media assistant for the Warrington College of Business while pursuing online classes. This role has allowed me to further develop my skills, but it also presents the unique challenge of working remotely. I had to create a dedicated workspace at home and establish a routine to maintain focus and productivity. Communication became key—I make a point to check in with my team regularly and seek feedback on my work. This proactive approach has helped me build strong relationships with colleagues and feel more integrated into the team.
For students considering the Innovation Academy, my advice is straightforward: embrace the unconventional. The IA is designed for those willing to think creatively and take risks. Don’t hesitate to dive into projects that challenge you. Collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds; their insights can enhance your learning experience. Remember, every setback is an opportunity to learn something new.
If you’re currently navigating the job hunt, don’t underestimate the power of networking. Attend events, join student organizations related to your field, and connect with alumni. A simple message expressing interest in someone’s work can lead to invaluable opportunities. It’s amazing how many professionals are willing to help if you reach out
Finally, for those new to the workforce, remember that it’s normal to feel a bit out of your depth at first. Every job has a learning curve, and asking questions is essential. Seek out mentors who can guide you through this early stage of your career. Their insights can help you navigate challenges and boost your confidence.
In conclusion, my experiences at UF and the IA have instilled in me a sense of resilience, adaptability, and the importance of proactive communication. Each challenge has propelled me toward personal and professional growth. Embrace every opportunity, learn from your setbacks, and keep pushing forward—success is just around the corner.
