Building a Pathway for Diversity in Tech and Learning from the Innovation Academy
By Mya Ramsey
As a freshman entering the University of Florida, I had no idea how transformative my experience would be. But thanks to the Innovation Academy’s summer abroad program in Ireland, my time at UF started to kick off with an adventure.
During that summer in Ireland, I forged friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. These incredible individuals have been instrumental in helping me navigate the transition into college life, offering support, laughter, and camaraderie along the way.
The program wasn’t just about making friends, though. I learned invaluable lessons from our mentors, Charlie Cummings and Sierra Calhoun-Pollard. They taught me the importance of education and creativity, helping me build the confidence to tackle any challenge that came my way. Their guidance and the resources they provided have been a constant source of support throughout my college years.
However, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. As I progressed through my computer science program, I found myself grappling with imposter syndrome. Looking around, I often felt out of place, struggling to see people who resembled me excelling in school or industry. This made it hard for me to believe I truly belonged or was capable of achieving what my peers were accomplishing.
The Innovation Academy has also gifted me with other incredible opportunities. I secured an internship with the Loss Prevention Research Council, where I’ve honed my skills in data management and analytics. IA also played a role in helping me land my current job at the Lastinger Learning Center, where I’m contributing to the New Worlds Institute databases and tracking books distributed to help kids stay at grade-level reading.
Fortunately, my involvement with ColorStack changed everything. ColorStack is a national organization whose mission is to help Black and LatinX students succeed in the tech industry. This organization became my community, a place where I was embraced for who I am. The founding president of the University of Florida chapter, Carson Johnson, and vice president, Gabriel Castejon, taught me so much – not just about programming, but about leadership and making a difference.
They entrusted me with the role of physical marketing coordinator for ColorStack at UF, where I was responsible for advertising and promoting the club’s mission on campus. Their faith in me pushed me to grow, eventually leading to my current position as ColorStack President at the University of Florida. Under my leadership, we’ve grown to over 100 members and secured recognition from six sponsors including Bloomberg, CapitalOne, and NextEra.
Being part of ColorStack has opened doors I never thought possible. I had the opportunity to travel to San Jose, California, with minimal personal expense, meeting with companies like Bloomberg, Duolingo, and Amway. This experience opened my eyes to the world and made me believe that I had it within me to achieve my aspirations.
To those considering joining the Innovation Academy or currently navigating the job hunt, I offer this advice: Embrace every opportunity that comes your way. The connections you make and the experiences you gain are invaluable. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – whether it’s studying abroad, joining a club, or taking on a leadership role.
For any job, research opportunities, or study abroad programs, remember that feeling out of place is normal. Seek out communities and mentors who support and believe in you. Your unique perspective is valuable, and there’s a place for you in whatever field you choose.
Lastly, to those struggling with imposter syndrome: You are not alone. Remember that your presence in these spaces is not a mistake – you’ve earned your place. Surround yourself with supportive peers and mentors, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
My journey from a nervous freshman to the president of ColorStack UF has been filled with challenges, growth, and incredible opportunities. The Innovation Academy and the people I’ve met along the way have shaped my college experience in ways I never expected. As you embark on your own journey, remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and your unique path is what makes you valuable .
