Redefining Horizons: My College Expedition of Innovating for a Better Tomorrow
By Nicholas Slunaker
As an advocate for mental health awareness and resilience, I believe in the power of surrounding oneself with motivated individuals, especially in academic settings like the Innovation Academy. My own journey has taught me the importance of navigating challenges with persistence and self-awareness, particularly when facing the complexities of today’s socio-political landscape. It’s crucial for students, especially minorities, to prioritize their well-being amidst the pressures of academia. By acknowledging and addressing personal adversities, we can pave the way for holistic growth and success in both academic and personal endeavors.
Throughout my time in college, I have had the opportunity to engage with various organizations. Among these, the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast stands out as having the most significant impact on my personal development, particularly during my internship with their diversity, equity, and inclusion taskforce. This experience allowed me to closely collaborate with my supervisor, collecting data to bolster diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. It was a particularly enlightening process due to the context of Florida’s House Bill 999, which aims to prohibit such initiatives within organizations and institutions. Witnessing how my supervisor and the human resource department leveraged different consultants to navigate potential policy violations (due to Florida’s House Bill 999) while still advancing inclusion efforts inspired me to pursue a career in a similar field.
One of the most significant highlights of my academic journey unfolded within an Innovation Academy class (Creativity in Action). Here, I had the privilege of participating in a competition alongside other esteemed student groups. Our team, distinguished as the green team, embarked on a journey of innovation, conceptualizing a pioneering prototype known as the Alert U device. This sophisticated creation was meticulously engineered to redefine student safety, seamlessly integrating a discreet police notification system into a compact keychain design. With a strategic focus on the discerning demographic of college students and young adults in Gainesville, our project aimed to address pertinent safety concerns with unprecedented sophistication and efficacy.
Our team won the “Make It Happen” award at our showcase event, which stands out as a highlight of my time as an Innovation Academy student at the University of Florida. This catalyst competition epitomized the essence of innovation, underscoring the transformative potential of collaborative ingenuity and the profound impact of daring to challenge conventional paradigms.
Navigating independence has proven to be the most challenging aspect of my journey thus far. Learning to stand on my own has been both arduous and rewarding, and it’s a process I continue to navigate. My advice to fellow Innovation Academy students is to surround themselves with motivated individuals. Personally, I’ve encountered mental health challenges upon leaving familiar social environments and navigating the socio-political context of today. This transition highlighted the importance of taking others’ opinions with a grain of salt, especially during times of adversity. Persistence and daily growth are paramount for students, and perhaps for individuals in general.
Further highlighting the significance of mental health, particularly for minority students, cannot be overstated. Additionally, underscoring its importance for students within the Innovation Academy is crucial. As students navigate life’s challenges, it’s vital for them to recognize that their well-being takes precedence. Personally, when I encountered adversity, it was only by taking a step back and truly acknowledging my position in life that I was able to move forward completely.
For those in search of research opportunities, the University of Florida’s research database remains an invaluable resource. Moreover, individuals interested in healthcare can derive substantial benefits from leveraging resources such as HealthStreet. These avenues not only offer avenues for academic and professional growth but also serve as platforms for nurturing and sustaining mental well-being amidst the rigors of academic pursuit.
I’m currently a part of UF Innovation Fellowship, which is a unique, real-world entrepreneurial program jointly offered by the UF Engineering Innovation Institute and the College of Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center. I’m looking forward to learning more about the innovative process as I work with my fellow peers. Finally, I am very proud to have been chosen as an Inaugural GatorCorps member, which is an AmeriCorps program affiliated with the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience, affording me the opportunity promote climate change adaptation and collaborate with local partners to foster resilient communities within the Florida Resilient Cities program. I’m currently beginning to really dive into these programs and I’m learning more about resilient communities. I’m excited to demonstrate my commitment to these programs but also my academic career.
